How to install on Android

Tap Download for Android above. If the browser asks whether to keep the file, choose Keep — expected for apps that don’t come from the Play Store.
Open the downloaded file. If Android asks, allow installation from that source (Chrome or Files), then tap Install.
Open CrewChirp, tap Start a crew or Join a crew, and enter a display name. Your keys are created on the phone; no account or internet is needed.

The app asks for Nearby Devices / Bluetooth the first time you use Nearby (on Android 10–12 also Location, which the OS requires for Bluetooth scanning — CrewChirp does not read GPS), and for the microphone the first time you record a voice clip. More help is on the Help page.

Updating an older version?

test2 and test3 update in place. 1.0.0-test4 uses the same package ID and the same test signing key, so it installs straight over test2 or test3 and keeps your identity, contacts, chats, crews and queued messages.

Builds before test2 (for example crewchirp-debug.apk) were signed with a different key and Android refuses to install over them (“App not installed”). Uninstalling deletes everything on that phone, so first: Settings → Back up messages in the old build → uninstall → install 1.0.0-test4 → open it with any name → Settings → Restore from backup.

If the old build is already gone, choose I have a recovery phrase at first launch. The recovery phrase restores your identity — not your message history.

A future store release may be signed with a different key; if so, moving to it will require the same backup-and-restore migration.
